OVERVIEW

Have you ever wondered how artists of the past produced complex narrative paintings with such apparent ease? Tired of doing endless academic studies of sitting nude after sitting nude, and not seeing how this leads to the work you dream of? Overwhelmed by how much there is to learn?

You’re not alone! Even with a great art education, I spent years feeling stuck, not knowing what to focus on, not seeing how to put all the skills together and thinking I had to know everything- it was paralyzing!

My solution was to read every article, find every little study and collect every clue about the way artists like Bouguereau, Bonnat and Gerome were trained- to my surprise, the methods were simple, clear and above all, FUN. And now, after testing these ideas extensively, I’ve compiled them into a straightforward, comprehensive framework that I’m excited to share with you, so you don’t have to feel as lost as I did!

Whether you’re in art school or learning on your own, whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned pro- if you’re looking for a blueprint for your art education, if you want greater creative freedom and you’re tired of wondering, this is the workshop for you!

GOALS

Using the Prix de Rome contest as our inspiration, we'll go behind the scenes and explore the more obscure aspects of picturemaking - from practical perspective, to bits of drapery, to how to set a figure in a scene- all the little parts that make complex images come to life, but are rarely talked about in modern ateliers.

Over the course of 3 intensive sessions, we'll learn:

*the history of the Prix de Rome and 19th c training

*how to organize a large project and keep the process manageable

*how to build and work from mannequins, maquettes and models

*how to compose an image that tells a compelling story

*the role of perspective and drawing from imagination

*the difference between academic studies and production drawings

*how to apply anatomy/drapery knowledge simply and effectively

*how to create believable characters and capture their expressions

*how to budget and save money on models and supplies

*how to choose drawing and painting materials

*how to avoid perfectionism and enjoy the process!

Using my own work along with historical examples, I’ll walk you through the entire picturemaking process, answering your questions and drawing demonstrations for you in real time.

Think of this as a big friendly chat. There will be no homework or critiques, just a ton of the practical information we all crave, juicy art gossip and a hell of a good time! Throughout, I'll show you how, by keeping things simple and manageable, the impossible becomes possible- in a way that's likely faster and easier than you expect!

My goal is for you to leave this workshop inspired, energized and with an extremely clear understanding of how narrative paintings go from idea to reality, so you can go out into the world and use any (or all!) of these concepts to create your own beautiful, unique work!
